Sony has recently bought out its former partner Ericsson. This means that the smartphones maker is now solely owned by the Japanese company. This came after SE (Sony Ericsson) announced massive losses for last year. It announced net losses of 247 million Euros for the entire year of 2011 and a loss of 207 million Euros for the final quarter of the same year. With the buyout now final, the Japanese-based company plans to get back in the game. One of the ways in which it plans to do this is its new outlook in smartphone design. This is evident in the Xperia S.
There are a number of reasons why the competition was allowed to get ahead of SE handsets. When a number of big names among Android manufacturers were starting to release smartphones with cutting-edge hardware, SE’s handsets were left behind. Motorola and LG released two of the first Android devices sporting a 1 GHz dual-core processor. These were the LG Optimus 2X and the Motorola Atrix. Early in 2011, both HTC and Samsung soon followed. HTC released the Sensation and Samsung released the Galaxy S2. The two smartphones came packed with 1.2 GHz dual-core processors. When everyone else were releasing phones sporting cutting edge technology, SE was stuck with single-core handsets such as the Play and the Arc S. This is no longer the case with the Xperia S.
With this new smartphone, the Japanese company has proven that it still remains as one of the top Android manufacturers in the industry. If you thought performance and a larger screen is all the phone had to offer, think again. It currently sports the most powerful camera equipped on a mobile device. This smartphone comes with a 12 megapixel camera that is capable of recording videos in 1080p. It also comes with a 1.3 megapixel secondary camera that is capable of recording videos in 720p.
Now that Sony has a smartphone that can better compete with the competition, it has now been given another chance to retake the market.
