Sony Xperia S

The Sony Xperia S is the latest in the rather comprehensive Xperia range, and the first to remove the ‘Ericsson’ branding of previous handsets. Recently released, it is already turning a lot of heads in the smartphone world. This is thanks to a combination of appealing styling and a hi-tech list of features.

In this article I will look at some of the key features which make this such an appealing handset.

Aesthetics
Previous releases from the Xperia range like the Xperia Arc S and Xperia Ray have been arguably among the best looking smartphones to be released in recent months. The Xperia S continues this trend. The handset oozes class; it has the classic ‘candy bar’ form factor with a somewhat minimalist style. The screen merges seamlessly with the black edges of the phone, so when the phone is turned off or the screen is locked it is hard to separate the screen from the rest of the phone. If you are looking for an elegantly styled smartphone, the Sony Xperia S is certainly worthy of a place on your shortlist of potential handsets.

Camera
One of the most publicised features of this device is the built-in digital camera. It is the first smartphone since the Nokia N8 to boast a camera resolution of 12 megapixels. Therefore, you can expect still images with quality which can be matched by very few other smartphones currently available. Of course, with such a high pixel resolution comes the ability to capture video footage in 1080p which is full high-definition. The camera goes beyond the standard functions of simply shooting videos and taking photos; there is a panoramic shot feature which replicates the effect of using a wide-angle lens on a professional quality camera. As you would probably expect the camera also has the standard package of features which make life that little bit easier when trying to take quality photos. Autofocus, image stabilisation and face & smile detection can all be set to automatic so you are likely to achieve the desired results first time. As a camera phone, the Sony Xperia S is among the best. If this is an important feature for you, then this handset is likely to be an ideal choice.

Screen
The all around quality of the spec list continues with the screen. The LED backlit LCD capacitive screen is similar to that of the iPhone 4S with its retina display in terms of the technology used. However there is a major difference between these two phones and this is in its pixel resolution. The Sony Xperia S can claim to be one of the few smartphones with a higher resolution than that of the popular Apple device and its retina display. At 720x 1280, the resolution of the screen makes everything on the screen appear in ultra high quality; ideal for playing games downloaded from the Android Market or watching high-definition movies, the screen equally makes more mundane tasks enjoyable, like composing text or email messages or browsing the web.

The device currently runs the Gingerbread version of the Android operating system but it has been confirmed that the phone will support an upgrade to the Ice Cream Sandwich version upon its imminent release. Therefore, you can expect the ultimate smartphone experience thanks to the most up to date version of the popular platform along with some of the most impressive hardware currently available on any smartphone.

Sony Xperia S – Sony’s Chance to Retake the Market

Sony has recently bought out its former partner Ericsson. This means that the smartphones maker is now solely owned by the Japanese company. This came after SE (Sony Ericsson) announced massive losses for last year. It announced net losses of 247 million Euros for the entire year of 2011 and a loss of 207 million Euros for the final quarter of the same year. With the buyout now final, the Japanese-based company plans to get back in the game. One of the ways in which it plans to do this is its new outlook in smartphone design. This is evident in the Xperia S.

There are a number of reasons why the competition was allowed to get ahead of SE handsets. When a number of big names among Android manufacturers were starting to release smartphones with cutting-edge hardware, SE’s handsets were left behind. Motorola and LG released two of the first Android devices sporting a 1 GHz dual-core processor. These were the LG Optimus 2X and the Motorola Atrix. Early in 2011, both HTC and Samsung soon followed. HTC released the Sensation and Samsung released the Galaxy S2. The two smartphones came packed with 1.2 GHz dual-core processors. When everyone else were releasing phones sporting cutting edge technology, SE was stuck with single-core handsets such as the Play and the Arc S. This is no longer the case with the Xperia S.

With this new smartphone, the Japanese company has proven that it still remains as one of the top Android manufacturers in the industry. This handset sports an HD 4.3 inch display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. True, other past models sport 4 inch touch screens like the Arc S. Is this all the smartphone has to offer?

Other than the phone’s 4.3 inch HD display, the Xperia S sports one of the most powerful CPU’s available to mobile technology. It comes packed with a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon chipset with an Adreno 220 GPU (graphics processing unit) under the hood. as you can see, it has more processing power to offer.

If you thought performance and a larger screen is all the phone had to offer, think again. It currently sports the most powerful camera equipped on a mobile device. This smartphone comes with a 12 megapixel camera that is capable of recording videos in 1080p. It also comes with a 1.3 megapixel secondary camera that is capable of recording videos in 720p.

Now that Sony has a smartphone that can better compete with the competition, it has now been given another chance to retake the market.

In 2012 we are due to see the release of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 5, two premium smartphones that look set to become a success with consumers everywhere. These models will boast some superb features and specification but will be two of the more expensive devices available. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to these new phones then two of the original models are still available. We take a look at the iPhone 4 8GB and the Samsung Galaxy S and see what screen technology and processing power is on offer from these two devices.

The iPhone 4 8GB is the first Apple phone to incorporate the famous retina display. This 3.5 inch LED backlit screen displays an incredible resolution of 640 x 960 pixels which means that the phone offers a pixel density of 326PPI. This is where the Retina name comes from as it is reported that this level exceeds what the human eye can detect. The screen on the phone measures 3.5 inches which means that it is one of the smaller phones available which may disappoint some consumers who are looking to use the model for video playback and gaming. It really is difficult to fault the quality of the display, images maintain a high level of detail and colours are reproduced accurately. The Samsung Galaxy S uses a larger 4.3 inch display that uses Super AMOLED technology to produce a vivid image that really is hard to beat. In terms of resolution however the model is lower than the 4S 8GB at 480 x 800 which equates to a pixel density of just 217PPI. When all is said and done there is very little to choose between the two models in this department. The iPhone undoubtedly offers the quality but the Samsung screen is larger and also offers what can be described as a more vivid and colourful display.

The iPhone 4 8GB and the Samsung Galaxy S are also well matched when we take a look at the camera features that are incorporated on both models. The iPhone uses a 5 mega pixel camera that is capable of capturing a high quality of image. The model includes an LED flash which is a feature that is sadly missing on the Samsung Galaxy S. This means that the Apple phone is better suited for capturing photographs in situations with low light levels. A secondary camera is included on the model which enables the use of the new Facetime video calling feature and can also capture images at VGA quality. The Samsung offers the same 5 mega pixel resolution from its main camera. In terms of video capture both model can record HD footage at 720P resolution which means that video looks great when displayed on the phones screen or when transferred to a larger television or computer monitor.

If you are looking for a high quality smartphone but do not mind choosing a model that is a little older than many new handset then you will find the iPhone 4 8GB and the Samsung Galaxy S hard to beat. Both devices incorporate a high quality display and excellent multi media feature for capturing photographs and video footage.
